The Perfect Wedding Getaway Car

The Perfect Wedding Getaway Car

Imagine riding off into the sunset hand in hand with your new partner for life after the most romantic, fun, and exhilarating day you’ve ever experienced in the back seat of a chauffeured 1949 Cadillac Convertible: The perfect wedding getaway car.

Choosing an outstanding candidate as the perfect wedding getaway car for certain past years may be difficult, but for 1949 the selection is narrowed down to three most worthy of consideration. In 1949 the automobile market was dominated by a sophisticated collection of American Classics that included Ford, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac. While the 1949 Ford has an entirely new chassis and body, plus many mechanical changes, it offered nothing truly “new” or outstanding from an engineering viewpoint. The Cadillac on the other hand has an outstanding new V-8 engine. The Cadillac, with 10 percent more piston displacement than its Oldsmobile counterpart, develops 18.5 percent more horsepower and weighs a few pounds less. Mechanics and engineering innovation aside, the 1949 Cadillac is a classic piece of American Made beauty that is hard to compete with.

In 1949 Motor Trend Magazine (the newly launched up-start two months prior by Hot Rod publisher Robert E. Petersen) declared the 1949 Cadillac its first Car of the Year. It was an inspired choice at the time and remains so all these years later. A dozen American presidents, several wars, and the eight-track tape player have come and gone since then but the timeless classic beauty of the 1949 Cadillac lives on in a few rare specimen.

General Motors had the first all-new postwar Cadillac’s chassis and body design ready a year ahead of a new powertrain. The 1946-47 Caddys were quickly updated versions of pre-WWII models. The styling of the 1949 Cadillac was as fresh as fresh could be, with substance and mass befitting a premium luxury marque, yet elegant proportions and tastefully restrained use of trim. The understated hint of the fins that would dominate the next decade first appeared in 1941 have since become more pronounced, yet massive chrome bumpers and pool table-size trunklids were still a few years off. All this external beauty was complimented by the engineering feat beneath the hood to make this our all-time favorite Wedding Getaway Car.
